![]() Goffs and Its Schoolhouse tells the story of the community of Goffs that has existed at the top of the hill out of Needles since 1883 and that of its unique one-room desert schoolhouse. This is the most definitive work on any community in the East Mojave Desert. Through this careful reconstruction of Goffs history is seen a glimpse of the entire region. The rich chronology is described through stories of the trials and tribulations of Goffs: a shootout at the Goffs Hotel over a woman, a murder on the porch of the schoolhouse at a dance in 1928 during prohibition, the fires that devastated sections of the town, the cowboys whose range came right down to the tracks in Goffs, the railroaders, the highway people, and the homesteaders. The early historic images include businesses in early Goffs, including the post office, service stations, the Wayside Inn, and many of the schoolhouse including two taken in 1914 before the sidewalks and fence were put in. You'll see diamond-stack steamers in Goffs before the turn of the century. The book was researched and authored by renowned desert historian Dennis Casebier. The book is hard bound, printed on high quality paper, contains 176 pages and is 6¾" X 9½" bound in tan cloth with a full color dust jacket featuring a picture of the Schoolhouse prior to restoration and a collage of black and white historical photographs. On the end sheets is listed the names of the 412 students who attended the school between 1911 and 1937 showing the years of attendance for each student. It contains an index, annotations, references to basic sources, and features 100 photographs and images, both modern and historical. The book is available by mail order from the Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association and in the Association's gift shop at the Goffs Schoolhouse.
